How to properly set-up SiteMeter in I.PH

June 8, 2007

I was browsing random blogs in i.ph and noticed that they are already using the new widgets in the sidebar.  Props to the i.ph team for adding new contents.

One of the most used widget is the SiteMeter. So you want to add this to your blog to satisfy your stat cravings, right? Fret no more. I have here the guide on how to install it properly.

In order to properly add the widget to your blog, you need to do the following steps:

1.    Click on the SiteMeter in the sidebar in the left side.

 2.    An install window will show. Click on Preview. You will see a sitemeter box on the preview window with 90,000++ hits.

3.    Click Install.

4.    You will now see the Sitemeter box installed in your sidebar.

5.    You will notice that the meter already has 98,000++ hits. Click on the Sitemeter box. This will take you to http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s=s25widgetbox. Notice the title "Widget Box" and below it is the string "Site Summary". Yup you guess it right. This is the stat site for WidgetBox.com.

In order to get SiteMeter to record your site stats, you need to create an account with them first. The site offers free accounts so there will be no problem there.

In order to sign-up go to http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=signupoptions

6.    In the Sign Up page, tick the checkbox at the bottom and then click Sign Up!

7.    Fill up the text box. Click Next

8.    Fill up the text box. Click Next

9.    Review the entries. Take note of the code name. You will need it later. If everything is correct, click Next

10.    It will now show the Success page.

11.    Now that you have an account, go to the WidgetBox sitemeter site. Input the code name in the codename textbox. As you can see in the preview, the hit count has disappeared. This is normal. You can customize the settings later when you login to sitemeter manager console :

12.    Click Get Widget. A new window will appear. Click GetWidgetCode

13.    Copy the code.

14.    Go to your blog then click edit on SIteMeter section.

15.    Overwrite the code in the textbox. Then click Install.

16.    SiteMeter can now record your stat. To check your stat, click on the SIteMeter button. You will notice that the title is now your site name and not WIdgetBox.

Congratulations on your SiteMeter!

Hey Cow! Thanks for the awesome walkthrough. We kept the sample code up as a way for people to see what the code they should be getting should look like. I guess some people got ahead of themselves and clicked install immediately. We’ll be making it much clearer that the codes present are just sample codes and that they should generate their own widget codes. We much appreciate the heads up! Cheers!

hi cow! thanks for this great visual guide. i tried to install widgetbox code for sitemeter, and got my summary stats fine, but my location stats shows the referring url like this: http://s-ideasnpink.i.ph/uploaded/ifr-itmre9HR0xok7.htm?r=19070783948 the visit entry page and visit exit pages shows something like this:
http://widgetserver….t.timestamp=11848512
and NO outclick stats. :(
I’d like to know if your sitemeter location stats are doing just fine?
IMO, i.ph should enable the javascript code provided by sitemeter. using widgetbox increases page loading time too. anyway, i should be emailing i.ph about this and not you, hehehe…
anyway, thanks again! :)
